Elephant Conservation

The interior of the tagua nut bears a close resemblance to animal ivory. It is hoped that using this natural product in jewelry and sculptures will lessen the threat to the elephant from the ivory trade, which currently provokes the slaughter of thousands of elephants each year.

Rainforest Preservation
In a single year, the tagua palm tree can produce up to 20 pounds of nuts and continues to produce year after year. This builds respect for the trees on tropical coastal plains, reducing the risk of "slash and burn" farming techniques.

Social Wellbeing
In many areas where the tagua palm tree flourishes, the harvest of tagua and production of buttons, jewelry and sculptures creates employment opportunities, benefiting local families. This, in turn, provides resources for food, clothing, schooling, and housing.
